The Met Gala is one of the more striking social charity events in the fashion world. Celebrities all over the world from different sectors meet at the red carpet with the aim of fundraising for the museum, at the same time, they all try their best to follow the year’s theme.
It is celebrated the first monday of may and it could be said that it is like the Oscars in the fashion industry, the event is organized by Anna Wintour, the Vogue editorial and the director of Conde Nast.
This year’s code was Gilded Glamour, in reference to the prosperity of the years 1870 and 1890 in the USA. This year’s gala created a debate due to the difficult situation that some families have to face because of the huge inflation of the last months, the highest in the last four decades in the country, so the population felt that the topic was excessive.
In between glitter and feather, the actor Riz Ahmed, appeared dress as one of the workers that collaborated on the huge infraestructures of the country, in the industrial movement. “This is a tribute to the immigrant workers who kept the Golden Age golden,” he declared on the red carpet.
The entries to the event are around 35.000 dollars and the book of a table around 300.000, something which is usually covered by haute couture brands, this means a fundraising of around 17 million dollars in just one night.
The purpose of the night is showing off the creations of the designers but more important is making money for the Met’s Costume Institute, the museum’s fashion department founded in 1932. The gala began in 1948 under the initiative of the fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert and in 1972 it became the glamorous event that it is today.
In the last 5 years, the gala has raised 70 millions. something which is advantageous since it is known that the production of the event is around 4 million dollars. It is harder to record the publicity advantages of the fashion brands, as well as the cost of the dresses which is usually around 5.000 and 35.000 dollars.
The surprise of this year was the appearance of Kim Kardashian with Marilyn Monroe’s dress in JF Kennedy’s birthday which was auctioned for almost 5 millions.
